Psychologist or a psychiatrist? 3 questions, of Dundee, McHenry, Rolling Meadows

Patients are always surprised to learn that there are very few laws governing the practice of medicine. In fact, a medical doctor licensed by the practice of his state medical board – whatever his specialty – providing legal advice to anyone, even if not trained in psychology at all!
For example, the mere fact that a doctor calls himself a psychiatrist, is not a guarantee that is actually responsible to practice psychiatry. For example, certified, legally, a proctologist, a medical practitioner as a specialist in diseases of the rectum, may be non-Board Certified psychiatrist and label young people to do counseling for problems with drugs or psychotherapy for suicidal patients -all without any training in psychology.
A urologist to identify only as a specialist in treating diseases of the urinary tract is re-certified as a psychiatrist, but not a certificate, and even dangerous treatment of bipolar patients, a dermatologist and could not really be called as an expert in diseases of the skin, not a certified psychiatrist and treating your child for ADHD, it is all legal and can not be done without training in psychology or mental health treatment.
These three examples may seem ridiculous. But remember the men and women often have their treatments for depression and anxiety without ever checking to see or even care, in order, if they visit the doctor board certified in psychiatry?
Do not assume your doctor has the right to exercise the powers of high quality psychological counseling or psychotherapy. Finally, the Board certification in psychiatry is not a guarantee because most psychiatrist with a certificate of three years only have specialized training in mental health treatment.
Most of their training in physiology, chemistry, science and general medicine. Therefore, they are usually prescribe medications, and not a little, if any, counseling or psychotherapy.
The screen of your therapist possible with the following three questions:
First Are you certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology?
Make sure if your doctor labels himself, a psychiatrist who is certified by the American Board
of Psychiatry and Neurology. In this case, it means he would receive specialized training in psychological treatments.
Note, however, that the training of psychiatrists often centered on physical therapies, such as prescription drugs and also the use of shock treatments. Psychiatrists sometimes receive little training in psychotherapy, counseling and psychological testing.
You know what that means. If you need to see a psychiatrist, the chances are that you walk with a recipe.
Certainly there are some psychiatrists who are more rounded in their education and who knows something of psychotherapy. However, chances are good that if your doctor has an MD or DO degree, you go with a recipe as a primary treatment or unique.
2nd If you are registered or licensed by the State Board of Psychology as a clinical psychologist?
Although there are many thousands of professionals
the United States that some type of counseling or psychotherapy, only a small percentage of them are high-level practitioners, licensure of clinical psychology to do!
To become a clinical psychologist needs about six years, specializing in college and graduate training in mental health, counseling, psychotherapy and diagnostics. This training is obtained during the last two years of college, followed by 3-4 years of specialized higher education after college.
The psychologist has a doctorate in psychological studies of emotion, thought and behavior. Psychologists must be the equivalent of a one-year internship in clinical psychology-no classes irrelevant to the anatomy or proctology, that enormous amounts of training in psychological treatment, psychotherapy, family therapy, the counseling and specific diagnostic tests.
Only four years of medical school training in anatomy, obstetrics and other medical sciences, in addition to perhaps a weekend or a few speed reading course on psychology, perhaps the only education that can have your Non-certified psychiatrist. This is certainly not a substitute for rigorous training psychologists and highly specialized for many years.
Remember, you’re protected when you consult a clinical psychologist. Why? Because any professional who calls himself a clinical psychologist and a licensed independent clinical psychology practice has brought at least 6-7 years of college and graduate specific training in educational psychology.
If the Certification Board of doctor you see, you can not find, however, make sure you have consulted someone who may have little or no training in psychiatric and psychological treatment. In fact, you may find that you receive less dangerous forms of psychiatric care, without ever noticing it.
If the third Council of State of psychology or medicine, you investigated any complaints or malpractice suits?
It is true that even psychiatrists and clinical psychologists great attraction from time to time. However, you can find your states professional advice to see if your therapist has a pattern of poor care or inappropriate behavior demonstrated.
Questions, you are often told to ask, but are not relevant:
First To those who consider themselves psychiatrists: Are you certified board?
Almost all doctors are certified by a board or another. When a person is an MD or DO degree, but not in the board is certified is not enough. The right question is: Are you certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology?
2nd In what state you are licensed to practice psychotherapy and counseling?
Remember the states are not expressly authorized doctors to practice psychotherapy and counseling. Absolutely all the doctors with a valid license can legally provide these specialized medical services, mental health, even if they have no psychiatric training!
There are no rules that restrict doctors in their practice specialty, and not one of the 50
States banned the practice of psychiatry by non-psychiatrists. Asking the right question is a doctor, do you close a
official resident in psychiatry?
3rd If the therapist is not a physician but a clinical psychologist, you are better protected. Just asking, you are authorized by the state, regardless of the practice of clinical psychology?
If the answer is yes, unlike doctors who have the license to practice, you’ll know that the therapist with the psychology license is highly qualified and specialized and rigorous training necessary to ensure freedom from psychological experts.
Not only can almost any doctor to obtain a certification board to something, not only with a physician authorized psychiatric services are trained or not, but remember that each doctor
